'Free From Fear' premiere

On the 30th October 2017 members of the BSCB Shadow Board attended the premiere of Free From Fear. Young people supported by the Barnardo’s BASE Project put forward the proposal for the ‘Free from Fear’ project in a meeting they called in 2016 with Senior Managers from across the area. They said “Every month, young people across Avon and Somerset are experiencing sexual exploitation. Too often the people who support them don’t recognize that they are being abused or use language which blames the young people themselves. We want to help young people and the people around them recognize abuse earlier by designing a resource from the perspective of young people who have been sexually exploited, and improve people’s responses”.

From start to finish the BASE young people were involved, from agreeing the budget, interviewing and recruiting the media firm, designing the films messaging, approving scripts, casting actors and agreeing the final edits, they were in control as young commissioners and creative producers. BSCB Shadow Board were thrilled to support their colleagues and peers at BASE in this work as part of their work this year to combat peer-on-peer exploitation and promote children’s rights to live free of abuse and harm, and access support to enable them to recover and thrive.

The three films include strong messages for young people who have been abused. They highlight issues such as self-harm, body image, online grooming and secrecy. The Shadow Board were particularly impressed with the use of spoken word to convey the experiences of young people, and the role of adults encouraging young people to access support. We thought the messages of recovery were very strong and sat closely with our values that children who have experienced abuse can go on to thrive with the right support and care. The Shadow Board will be sharing these films with their participation groups and working with Board members to promote the wide distribution of them in the city.
